Alpha Crew Invests in Internal Talent

At Alpha Crew, growth isn't just something we plan for on the business side, it's something we invest in for our people too. We're proud to work in an industry that moves fast and demands a lot, and we believe the best way to keep up with that pace is to back the people who already know how we work, understand our clients, and live our standards every day. That's exactly why we're delighted to share the promotion of David Gregory to Crew Boss. David has been with Alpha Crew for three years, bringing with him 14 years of experience in the events industry, and in that time he's become a driving force behind how our jobs get crewed, staffed, and delivered on the ground. To mark the promotion, we sat down with David to talk about his role, his favourite projects, and what makes Alpha Crew tick.

Q&A with David Gregory, Crew Boss

What is your name and what is your role at Alpha Crew?

‘My name is David Gregory and my role at Alpha is Crew Boss.’

How long have you been with Alpha Crew?

‘I've been with Alpha Crew for about three years now. I came from another company which I was with for 14 years, so I've done quite a lot in the industry - it's been absolutely fantastic, to be honest.’

What does a typical day at Alpha Crew look like for you?

‘At the moment it's getting into work and waiting for that phone to ring, because it's so busy. You get the odd quiet day, but right now we're rushed off our feet - probably 20 to 30 jobs a day, which myself and the office team go through to crew up. If there are any problems or issues, I try to sort them out, and if I can't, we go to the wider team and work together to get those jobs crewed. It can be stressful, especially when people don't pick up the phone or reply to messages, but that's a normal day for me: come in, computer on, cup of tea, and get started.’

What has been your favourite project or event you've worked on with us?

‘I've done quite a few, but the ones I enjoy most are the ones where you're constantly on the go - like Fashion Week. Those are always full on. The clients are very particular about how they want things done, so as a crew chief you have to really understand what the client needs - moving things three, four, five times in a day, and making sure the crew are up to speed on measuring and setting up benches. Burberry is probably one of the best, but I also enjoy the more straightforward builds, like steel deck work.’

What's the best part about working in the events industry?

‘How quickly everything moves. You're never doing the same thing twice. One day you could be moving a few desks around in an office, and the next you've got 20 crew building a K-pop studio - lighting, sound, rigging, the lot. Everyone works as a team to get the job finished, and it's always a quick turnaround. Those are the best ones, because you're working so fast that the time just flies.’

What's your favourite thing about Alpha Crew?

Honestly, it's the way we work - from the ground floor, your PVCs and Level 1s and 2s, right up through senior crew chiefs and into the office. Everyone talks to each other and knows what's happening on each site. There's a lot of communication through WhatsApp, texts, and phone calls, so nothing gets missed. Every job is set out exactly to what the client needs. I love that organisation - how it flows from the office straight into the field, with crew chiefs and senior crew chiefs taking on their tasks and passing it down the line. It just works as a fantastic team.’

Lastly, tell us a fun fact about yourself.

This one might sound a bit weird - even my wife thinks so - but I collect ducks. I'm not sure where the fascination came from, but I love picking them up from all over the place. I've got 275 of them now. My favourites are probably the hot rod duck and the Donald Trump duck, because you can move its hair around. I've also got some Star Wars ones in the collection. It's a strange hobby, but it's me.

If you could request a duck, which one would you go for?

‘I'd like a George duck, to be honest. I reckon that'd be a great one - very clingy, but really nice to talk to! I might have to put in a request at Alpha.’

Congratulations to David on the well deserved promotion. Here's to backing our people and watching them grow. To find out more about working at Alpha Crew, visit our careers page here.
