Five Years in the Making: Alpha Crew’s Best Bits
The Alpha Crew Mission
Alpha Crew was born in 2013. We began with seven eager crew members and a desire to make a difference. Having worked at crewing companies before launching the business, Founder and Managing Director, George Saladze knew all too well the common struggles that event crew members faced.
“My issue with the crewing industry was that everything was so impersonal. I was working for an agency that literally gave their employees codes to call them by instead of their names. And that just sums up the general approach to a lot of crewing companies.
I wanted to start a company that focused on people, passion and progression. Respect for the people, both staff and clients. Passion for the job, to enjoy it and to deliver the best possible results. And lastly progression to make sure we're always learning more, striving to improve our work and our clients events. And that’s what we’ve been striving to do since day one."
It's amazing to think how far we've come in five years. When reflecting on what we've done, it's impossible to ignore the fact that we’ve been a part of some major events in popular culture. But if it wasn’t for our strong relationships both within the team or with our clients, we wouldn’t have enjoyed them half as much.
The VIP experience
In 2013 we were asked to help set up the NME awards and have proudly been a fundamental part of the production team, every year since. We love doing music gigs and have been lucky enough to see a whole host of bands and artists perform during sound check - from Adele to Metallica and even Guns N Roses. One day we hope to set up the The Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury! Watch this space.
Blades of glory 2
That same year we were asked to set up the famous ice rink, Skate at Somerset House which we now look forward to annually. Although our team setting up the rink operates like a well oiled machine, you’d think our skating skills would be a better than they are. Perhaps in year six we’ll see Bes our Operations Director starting preparations for the next Winter Olympics à la Jimmy MacElroy from Blades of Glory.
Need for speed
Race on two years. It’s 2015 and our team is asked to work at the Festival of Speed, Goodwood, the biggest event of its kind. We’ve helped create some incredible structures for the likes of Mercedes, Ford and Renault. And the best part? The crew is required to make changes throughout the festival, which means we get to watch all the action over the weekend.
Boxing with Anthony Joshua
Sports events have always excited us and having the opportunity to meet iconic sporting legends is such a huge perk for us. Who else can say they had private boxing lessons from Anthony Joshua? We’ve had to start drawing straws now that we work on Sky One’s ‘A League of Their Own’. As core members of the production team since 2015, we’re humbled to have met so many famous sportspeople. Safe to say, it’s a decent gig.
The ultimate fashionistas
At the other end of the spectrum, we are living proof that fashion is not always glamourous (no offense guys). We’ve been working at Fashion Week for six years for leading British designers like Mulberry, Burberry and Anya Hindmarch. Want to know what’s hot for spring/summer? Just ask Jock. In all seriousness, we’ve developed an outstanding reputation within the fashion industry and are now the go-to crew for Fashion Week events.
Sneak peek at the Rolling Stones exhibition
No strangers to high pressure environments, we don’t really get nervous anymore. But when your job is to make sure that 500 precious Rolling Stones artefacts safely make their way to the Saatchi Gallery, you can’t help but break a sweat. Precious instruments, original stage designs, iconic costumes, rare studio tracks, unseen video footage and even personal diaries - we transported every single item. And what a privilege it was to be up close and personal with never before seen rock and roll paraphernalia.
Going for gold
By year four we were being noticed by the industry. A nomination for Best Crewing Company at the Event Production Awards was a true honor and testament to all our hard work. We narrowly missed out on taking the prize home but we’re confident that our exceptional team will take home the gold in the near future.
Where we are now
Having recently expanded our operations, we now have an experienced and reliable crew of 100 team members in London alone, 30 more in Birmingham and 60 across Paris and the South of France. Despite our size we’re really proud to have retained our strong company values. Our team loves working for Alpha Crew and we’re consistently praised by our clients for going above and beyond the call of duty.
Like toddlers, we’ve developed rapidly but we’re still learning everyday and putting our new skills and expertise into practise with each job we take on.
We’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to every single member of the Alpha Crew team for being so dedicated, loyal and hardworking. We’d also like to thank our clients for trusting us to work with you.
Here’s to the next five years.
