A Day in the Life of a Crew Chief
In this series we’ll be interviewing the Alpha Crew team to get an insight into what makes them tick, what their average day looks like and why they love working in events. First up is Crew Chief, Bradley Kempshall.
Hey Bradley. Tell us what your job is.
I am an event Crew Chief. So I am based on site and liaise with the client on the day, priorities tasks and instruct the team.
Do you ever work outside of London?
We have recently been to Sicily and Switzerland! To be honest, I’m usually based in London though.
What's the most exciting job you've ever done in your career?
It has to be operating the props on stage for the Olympics 2012 in front 80,000 people. That was definitely a highlight!
Who's the most famous person you've ever met through work and do you still get star struck?
You do become less star struck over the years as it happens so often in events. Paul McCartney is probably the most famous person I’ve met.
What's your favourite part of your job?
I like seeing an event taking shape from nothing into something great. And the handshake with a happy client at the end of a job.
What's your favourite type of job?
TV shows and movies sets are my favourite type. I really love the thrill of working on a live show with an audience.
If you could invent a machine to make your job easier, what would it be?
A shrinking machine, to shrink heavy objects into tiny packages so they’re easier to carry!
Have you ever witnessed an on-stage blunder during a production?
No. But I have witnessed a certain Scottish colleague accidentally chop off the end of a finger during the de-rig of the London 2012 Olympics. Ouch.
